Fort Laramie — Woman in Green

Fort Laramie, Wyoming, United States

The Story

A woman in a green riding dress is said to return to Fort Laramie every seven years, galloping across the old Oregon Trail on a black horse.

The Hauntings

The Woman in Green tale long predates modern paranormal tourism. A National Park Service history records a 1976 evening gathering when a park official and guests claimed to see a ghostly rider cross the parade ground and vanish toward the river. The story traditionally identifies the rider as the daughter of an early fur-trading manager who rode away from the post and never returned. Other tellings put her on the old Oregon Trail itself. The several versions make a lasting frontier legend rather than a certain biography of a missing young woman.

The History

Fort Laramie was a major fur-trading and military post along the overland trails; its historic buildings are now preserved as a National Historic Site.
