The Story

Behind the imposing stone façade of West Virginia’s former state penitentiary, visitors now book historic walks and structured paranormal investigations.

The Hauntings

The old prison’s ghost tradition belongs to the cellblocks, isolation areas and corridors where guards and incarcerated people spent their days. Its tour operator offers dedicated paranormal experiences distinct from ordinary historical admission, inviting participants to listen and watch for unexplained activity in the preserved building. The prison also stages an October haunted-house attraction, but that is a separate performance, not the origin of its real ghost stories.

The History

The prison opened in the nineteenth century and ceased operating as a state penitentiary in 1995. Today it is one of Moundsville’s best-known historic attractions.

Plan Your Visit

Official guided tours, evening programs and paranormal sessions are available by booking through the prison operator. Event rules differ, and a daytime ticket does not authorize unsupervised entry into closed cellblocks. Check the current calendar before traveling.
