Nelsen’s Hall Bitters Pub
Washington Island, Wisconsin, United States

The Story
Footsteps on the stairs and doors closing by themselves keep Tom Nelsen in the conversation at his island tavern. The pub’s ghost tradition is modest, familiar and closely tied to its founder.
The Hauntings
Haunted Places collects staff accounts of unexplained stairway steps and moving doors, attributed locally to Tom Nelsen. Rather than a dramatic apparition with an elaborate tragedy, the story is of a proprietor who still seems to be around the building that carries his name.
The History
The Washington Island Chamber of Commerce dates the landmark to 1899. Nelsen’s remains a pub and restaurant on Main Road, with a long association with the island’s bitters tradition.
