Greenwood Memorial Terrace — Thousand Steps

Spokane, Washington, United States

Cemetery · local-legend

The Story

A crumbling staircase near a Spokane cemetery is the center of a ghost story about a climb that ends with faces and cries from the dead.

The Hauntings

The “Thousand Steps” is a local name for an old stairway said to test anyone who attempts to reach the top. In some versions, those who manage it glimpse faces among the stones below or hear voices from the cemetery. Other versions speak of strange rain-like coldness in the air. The important distinction is physical: the staircase itself is on private property and is not a permitted public route. The cemetery, however, has a legitimate visitor entrance that allows people to experience the setting without crossing forbidden ground.

The History

Greenwood Memorial Terrace is an established Spokane cemetery with historic sections and older structures, including the stairway that inspired local lore.
