The Story

East of Marfa, small lights seem to dance across the desert horizon. The designated viewing area offers a public place to watch the country’s best-known Texas ghost-light tradition without venturing onto surrounding land.

The Hauntings

Marfa’s stories describe points of red, blue and white light appearing southeast of town. Some hover at a distance; others dart across the plains, turn abruptly or dissolve before a watcher can follow them. Visit Marfa gathers these varying descriptions rather than promising one repeatable display. The uncertainty is part of the gathering: people come to watch a horizon that may reveal something unfamiliar or remain quiet. The tradition has grown into a community celebration, with the Marfa Lights Festival joining the nightly interest in the desert itself.

Plan Your Visit

Use the official Marfa Lights Viewing Area on US 90, nine miles east of Marfa toward Alpine. The chamber identifies it as a year-round place to watch after sunset. Stay within the designated public area rather than following lights across ranchland; sightings are not scheduled.
