The Story

At Fort Concho, a library door once seemed to answer a greeting. A museum librarian’s account brings an intimate haunting to the limestone buildings of this former military post.

The Hauntings

Librarian Evelyn Lemons told American Libraries that she was reading names of people who had died at the fort when the back door began opening. She called a greeting; the movement stopped, and nobody was outside. She also recalled unexplained locking of a historic door while working in Officers’ Quarters 9. These are her particular recollections, attached to two spaces within the fort—not a claim about every building.

The History

Established in 1867, Fort Concho became a substantial military post. The city’s historic site preserves the buildings and interprets the soldiers and community associated with them.

Plan Your Visit

Begin at the visitor center in Barracks 1, 630 South Oakes Street. Consult current city hours and ask which historic buildings are on the visitor route. Ordinary museum admission does not establish access to research workspaces or permission for an after-hours investigation.
