The Story
Memphis’s Orpheum Theatre is famous not only for its gilded auditorium, but for Mary, a mischievous child spirit whose story has become part of the venue’s own history.
The Hauntings
The Orpheum Theatre Group describes its building as the reported home of seven spirits, among them a twelve-year-old girl called Mary. She is said to linger around the theater and sometimes startle people working in the ornate performance space. The girl is part of the venue’s official folklore; her existence does not depend on turning an uncertain child’s death into a proven tragedy. The quieter notion of a phantom theatergoer, still fond of the building long after the applause has faded, is the detail that makes the story distinct.
The History
An earlier Grand Opera House stood on the site before fire destroyed it in 1923. The present lavish theater was built in the late 1920s and later used as a cinema before its restoration for live performances.
A sense of place.
