Nellie Vaughn became the subject of a mistaken vampire tradition, but the ghost stories portray a young woman trying to defend herself. Witnesses have reported a girl near her burial place and a voice insisting that she is perfectly pleasant. Her ominous epitaph and later vandalism helped keep the legend circulating.
