Pendle Hill
Barley, Lancashire, United Kingdom
Natural landmark · local-legend
The Story
A brooding Lancashire hill, surrounded by villages where witch-trial history and centuries of unsettling folklore still linger.
The Hauntings
Pendle’s folklore follows paths through the villages and countryside below the hill. The Walking with Witches trail recounts stories of meetings with the devil and accusations repeated during the 1612 trials, showing how particular places became part of the region’s supernatural imagination. Follow the public routes to explore that landscape; the homes and farms within it remain private places, not invitations to enter.
The History
The landscape around Pendle Hill is closely tied to the witchcraft prosecutions of 1612. Visit Pendle’s heritage material and walking routes trace the surrounding villages and the people drawn into the trials. Their stories are the history of real people accused of witchcraft, remembered in a landscape where local memory and folklore have become closely entwined.
A sense of place.
