The Story

The winding grounds of Wildwood Cemetery have tales of a restless fireman’s mausoleum and an eerie divide between its older and newer graves.

The Hauntings

One story says a local fireman so feared premature burial that he arranged his mausoleum with a way out, and is still heard moving inside. Another divides the cemetery into supposedly quiet and haunted sides, with ghostly cries or a banshee-like voice said to favor the older ground. These are cemetery legends rather than a verified biographical account of one particular fireman. Visitors are more likely to notice the cemetery’s hills, woods and historic stonework, which give the tales a distinctive setting.

The History

The Wildwood Cemetery Company dates to the nineteenth century and continues to operate an active cemetery in Williamsport.
