The Story
A persistent intercom once gave Pendleton’s old Carnegie library an uneasy after-hours reputation. The building now hosts art and music, but its older story still belongs to these rooms.
The Hauntings
American Libraries recounts a custodian painting alone when the intercom buzzed repeatedly. Locally, such incidents were linked to Ruth Cochran, an assistant librarian who became gravely ill at the library in 1947 and later died in hospital. The story imagined her still trying to summon help. It is a recollection from the building’s library years, not a report from today’s arts-center staff.
The History
The library moved out in 1996. Its former 1916 Carnegie building now houses the Pendleton Center for the Arts, overlooking the Umatilla River.
A sense of place.
