Ohio State Reformatory
Mansfield, Ohio, United States

The Story
The enormous Gothic-styled reformatory in Mansfield is linked to voices, unexplained activity and booked paranormal explorations.
The Hauntings
The former prison’s paranormal reputation follows the old cellblocks and solitary spaces that now draw both history visitors and ghost hunters. Its preservation society offers paranormal experiences separately from the ordinary tour program. Modern haunted-house events also use the prison, but those performances are distinct from the stories and investigations that have developed around the building. There is something particular about the contrast between its castle-like exterior and rooms once used for everyday confinement.
The History
The institution served Ohio’s correctional system for generations before closing and becoming a preserved historic attraction. It is also known as a filming location for The Shawshank Redemption.
A sense of place.
