The Story
The cells of Mount Holly’s former county prison are still linked to ghost stories, and the museum makes room for both history and paranormal exploration.
The Hauntings
The Burlington County Parks System retells stories of spirits lingering in the old cellblocks and halls; the county also describes the former jail as a long-running paranormal hotspot. Its 2026 programming distinguishes ghost-story tours from a separate theatrical haunted attraction involving costumed performers and effects. For visitors interested in the haunting rather than staged scares, the museum offers a different experience: investigators can arrange time inside the actual preserved prison, with its heavy doors and corridors where the stories originated.
The History
Built in 1811, the stone prison held detainees until 1965. It survives as a museum rather than an operating correctional facility.
