The Story
Guests at Bretton Woods’ grand mountain hotel have a spectral favorite: Princess Caroline, said to visit Room 314 and watch over the resort.
The Hauntings
Hotel-heritage accounts describe Caroline Foster Stickney appearing as an elegantly dressed woman who sometimes sits at the edge of a bed in Room 314. Others tell of delicate knocks on doors and possessions briefly going missing before turning up again. An Omni hospitality announcement adds that Caroline is sometimes glimpsed brushing her hair while seated on the ornate bed associated with her travels. The detail is the core of the hotel’s haunting, an unusually domestic ghost story in a building designed around the comforts of Gilded Age visitors.
The History
Railroad hotel developer Joseph Stickney opened the Mount Washington Hotel in 1902, and his wife Caroline was closely associated with the property and its private dining spaces.
A sense of place.
