The Story
Alice gives Crofton’s Argo Hotel its most familiar ghost story. The operators describe a woman searching for her baby within a building that has welcomed railway passengers, patients and overnight guests.
The Hauntings
The Argo’s own account calls Alice a friendly presence. In its telling, she died in childbirth and continues searching through the hotel for her child. The emphasis is not on a threatening apparition, but on a sorrowful search that has become part of the inn’s identity. The operators describe other spirits as friendly too, without giving them individual histories.
The History
Built in 1912, the property later became the New Meridian Hotel and then a clinic. A 1994 restoration returned it to use as the Argo. Its changing purposes connect the ghost story with more than one chapter of Crofton life.
A sense of place.
