Devil’s Tramping Ground
Chatham County, North Carolina, United States
Natural landmark · local-legend
The Story
Deep in Chatham County, a strange bare circle is said to mark the place where the Devil walks a restless path each night.
The Hauntings
The story is simple and stubborn: a roughly circular patch of ground refuses to grow plants, because, according to the old legend, the Devil returns to pace over it while planning mischief. Objects left there are said to be displaced by morning, and some claim animals avoid the circle. The place has a real history of local fascination, including a nineteenth-century description of the clearing. Its supernatural meaning is part of North Carolina folklore, not an invitation to enter a private site.
The History
Chatham County’s historical association identifies the clearing and has discussed how its appearance inspired the Devil story. The site is on privately held land.
