The Story
In Deer Lodge, the former Montana State Prison invites visitors into its cellblocks for history by day and guided ghost investigations after dark.
The Hauntings
The Old Montana Prison’s nonprofit operator tells of strange encounters in its isolation areas, watch spaces and upper cell tiers. After-hours programs led by paranormal investigators allow registered guests to explore sections normally closed on daytime museum tours. The stories are connected to the preserved former prison, rather than the separate Halloween scare event held on the grounds. The historic buildings give the accounts a clear, visitable setting in western Montana.
The History
Opened in the nineteenth century, the former prison now forms part of the Old Prison and Auto Museum Complex administered by the Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation.

Plan Your Visit
The museum offers authorized daytime admission and booked special ghost-tour dates. Some investigations have age limits and allow additional restricted-space access only under guidance. Review the operator calendar before planning a visit.
