The Story
Beneath Saint Paul, former sandstone workings became a gangster-era gathering place with a story of murdered men who never quite left.
The Hauntings
The cave operator tells guests of an unsolved gangland killing associated with the site’s old casino years. In local tradition, the men killed there still haunt the passages. Whether heard as a gangster yarn or a ghost story, the account gives the underground rooms a second identity beyond their history as mines and mushroom growing space. The operator’s historical cave tour explicitly discusses this reputed haunting; it is not simply a Halloween stage set.
The History
The caves were first worked for silica sand and later used for mushroom cultivation. During Prohibition, parts were adapted for a restaurant and entertainment venue.
A sense of place.
