The Story
Maine’s granite Fort Knox overlooks the Penobscot River, with mysterious footsteps and recorded voices among its modern ghost-hunting traditions.
The Hauntings
Fort Knox’s own nonprofit operator describes unexplained experiences accumulated over roughly 150 years. Its guided paranormal programs lead groups through the fort’s passageways with investigators, making the reports part of the site’s current living folklore. Regional accounts describe lights, voices, footsteps and the feeling of a hand on a shoulder inside rooms built for coastal defense. These stories concern the Maine fort at Prospect, not the military installation with the same name in Kentucky.
The History
The fort was constructed to defend the Penobscot River and remained a defensive post rather than the site of a major battle. It is now a preserved historic landmark.
A sense of place.
