The Story
Beneath Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, preserved streets lead to Annie’s Room and a growing collection of dolls left for a child spirit.
The Hauntings
The Close’s best-known ghost story centers on Annie’s Room. In the account told by the attraction, Japanese psychic Aiko Gibo described contact with the spirit of a small child. Visitors have since left dolls in the room, creating a collection that has become part of the story itself. This gentle tradition of remembrance gives one of the Close’s historic rooms a very different kind of presence.
The History
Beneath Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Mary King’s Close preserves historic streets and rooms once alive with the city’s daily business. The close takes its name from Mary King, a prominent fabric trader who lived in the area in the 1630s. It is a distinct historic site, separate from the South Bridge and Blair Street vaults. Guided visits bring the lives of its former residents and workers into focus.
A sense of place.
