The Story
A deep sound called the Lion’s Roar gives this Gardner mansion a distinctive voice. Stairway footsteps, moving doors and figures in the halls join the stories told during reserved tours and overnight visits.
The Hauntings
The operator associates the mansion’s house-shaking Lion’s Roar with Sylvester Pierce. Other accounts describe heavy steps on the staircases, doors moving, shadow figures and voices captured during investigations. The Red Room, main bedroom, basement and billiards room feature in the property’s own descriptions of activity. Not every story depends on a dramatic backstory. A hallway figure or footsteps approaching through an otherwise quiet house supplies its own unease. The mansion’s accounts place these experiences in the rooms visitors actually explore, while its reserved investigation events provide a separate way to spend time with the stories after dark.
The History
Completed in 1875 for chair manufacturer Sylvester Knowlton Pierce, the Victorian house is distinguished by its tower, staircases and elaborate interior woodwork.
A sense of place.
