Harvard Shaker Cemetery — Lollipop Graveyard
Harvard, Massachusetts, United States

The Story
The rows of distinctive iron grave markers in Harvard’s Shaker cemetery have inspired stories of figures from the vanished community appearing nearby.
The Hauntings
Local folklore describes former Shaker residents glimpsed among the graves and the surrounding fields. What visitors can readily see is equally remarkable: hundreds of narrow iron markers with circular heads that resemble lollipops. The little cemetery is tied to a religious community whose members lived and worked together for generations. The ghost story is a modern local tradition.
The History
The Shakers began their cemetery in 1792. The distinctive cast-iron grave markers were introduced in the late 1870s and the burial ground later passed into town care.
A sense of place.
