Fitchburg, Massachusetts, United States

Cemetery · local-legend

The Story

A small Revolutionary-era graveyard near Fitchburg is known as “The Rev,” with tales of soldiers’ shadows and screams from the nearby woods.

The Hauntings

Ghost stories surrounding Dean Hill Cemetery mention the figures of Revolutionary War soldiers, a woman in white, frightening cries and stretches of sudden silence. The most dramatic versions also introduce occult rumors and incidents on surrounding roads, but the cemetery haunting does not depend on accepting those as recorded events. It is the contrast between an unassuming little burial ground and a surprisingly busy local imagination that gives “The Rev” its place on the Massachusetts ghost map.

The History

Dean Hill dates to the late eighteenth century and contains graves of local residents and veterans. It is a small municipal historic cemetery reached by a rural road.
