Sallie House

The Story

An ordinary-looking Atchison house became nationally known through the Pickman family’s accounts of disturbances in the 1990s. Its nursery stories include moving toys and a child’s voice. Visit Atchison now offers reserved day visits and separate overnight investigations.

The Hauntings

The Sallie House does not announce itself with a tower or a grand Gothic façade. That modest appearance is part of its unsettling appeal. Writing about her own visit, travel writer Jill Robbins found the house less imposing than the mansions around it, then became uncomfortable on the upper floor. The reputation resides in accounts of life inside these small rooms, not in the building’s outward drama. The name comes from a local story about a child called Sallie and a fatal operation at a physician’s home. In the house’s later reputation, however, the decisive period is the early 1990s, when Tony and Debra Pickman lived there. KANSAS! Magazine recounts their reports of apparitions, abrupt cold spots and unexplained marks, and describes how appearances on the television program Sightings carried the story beyond Atchison. Accounts repeated in the same feature place moving toys in a child’s room and a young voice near a closet. These give the nursery a particular place in the house’s lore. The fatal-operation tale remains the story attached to the name; it is not a substitute for a securely identified child’s biography. Robbins’s account is quieter. During an August 2023 visit she saw the toys and displays but did not report watching them move. She describes an anxious feeling near the upstairs rooms, followed by a decision to leave with her companion. It is a personal impression rather than the same experience reported by the former tenants, and belongs to the house’s growing variety of visitor accounts.

The History

Kansas Tourism places the house’s construction between 1867 and 1871 and associates it with the Finney family. Its earlier life was residential, long before television crews and overnight visitors made it a paranormal destination. The Pickmans’ tenancy in 1993 marks a well-documented stage in the spread of its modern reputation, not the construction of a purpose-built haunted attraction. Today, the tourism organization markets the house as a specific destination with its own admission options. That public visitor use distinguishes it from nearby homes whose owners have not offered access. Stories told on Atchison’s broader haunted-town routes should not turn every neighboring residence into an extension of this property.
