The Story
McInteer Villa’s tower and stained glass frame a more intimate haunting: footsteps overhead, moving belongings and a woman’s unexpected approval of a new chandelier. Reserved stays bring visitors inside this Atchison house.
The Hauntings
In KANSAS! magazine’s visit, Stephanie Neal described a voice heard by her husband Jeff after he installed a chandelier. A woman appeared to compliment his work, although he was alone. It is a particularly domestic encounter in a house more often photographed for its imposing exterior. The same report includes investigator Brian Murray’s account of footsteps, shadows, whistling and shifting objects during a group visit. Neal’s own interest rests as much in sounds heard directly as in equipment readings. The stories make the rooms feel occupied without requiring every experience to belong to one named spirit.
The History
Harness-and-saddle businessman John McInteer built the Queen Anne mansion in 1889–1890. It later spent time as a rooming house, adding another chapter of residents to its history.
A sense of place.
