The Story
Lawrence’s Eldridge Hotel keeps a favorite ghost story on its fifth floor, particularly around Room 506.
The Hauntings
The hotel’s haunting tradition centers on its namesake, Colonel Shalor Eldridge. Staff have described baffling incidents with door locks, and guests have reported a presence, unexpected sounds and activity near Room 506. In an interview preserved by a Kansas PBS documentary, a hotel representative tied the story to the original building stone kept inside the room. The idea of a spirit portal belongs to ghost lore; the room’s ongoing reputation does not require the stone to possess unusual powers.
The History
The building occupies a historic downtown Lawrence hotel site reconstructed over time after conflict and rebuilding in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
