The Story
The white-clad hitchhiker known as Resurrection Mary is said to disappear from a passing car as it nears this cemetery on Chicago’s Archer Avenue.
The Hauntings
Chicago History Museum records the beloved local tale of a blonde young woman in a pale dance dress asking motorists for a ride after leaving a ballroom. Drivers describe an oddly quiet passenger who vanishes before or upon reaching the cemetery gates. Versions of the story place her death in a traffic accident in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Researchers have proposed identities, but no single buried woman is securely established as the original Mary. The haunting belongs as much to the stretch of public roadway and its storytelling community as to the cemetery itself.
The History
Resurrection Catholic Cemetery is a working burial ground in Justice. The legend has circulated in Chicagoland since at least the 1930s.

Plan Your Visit
The cemetery has posted daytime grounds hours, with shorter hours during winter. Visit respectfully on foot during permitted times, and do not drive slowly searching for hitchhikers, stop in the traffic lanes of Archer Avenue or pursue supposed ghosts beyond closed gates.
