The Story
At the former Monticello College chapel, a vanished scent of lilacs is said to announce the return of beloved educator Harriet Haskell.
The Hauntings
The Lewis and Clark Community College student newspaper interviewed library staff about the story in 2014. Assistant director Liz Burns described catching an unmistakable perfume of lilacs near the basement stairs, speaking a familiar greeting to Harriet, and finding that the smell immediately disappeared. She also recalled books appearing neatly stacked after being left scattered, followed by what she interpreted as a soft chuckle. Other campus accounts mention a mysterious touch in the old chapel-library. These are attributed staff experiences, not a claim that the entire campus is haunted.
The History
Harriet Newell Haskell led Monticello Female Seminary for decades. A former chapel became Reid Memorial Library after the campus changed to Lewis and Clark Community College.
