The Story
Children’s voices, moving objects and dark figures are part of the folklore of the former Milton School, which now houses businesses and apartments.
The Hauntings
Alton’s old Milton School gathered stories about a young girl called Mary, classroom sounds without a visible source and shadows appearing in the hallways. One often repeated tale links a violent death to the property, but regional tourism material cautions that several of the dramatic school stories are myths. Witness accounts of footsteps and falling objects give the place a paranormal identity even without treating the rumored murder as established fact. Investigators once considered it a notable Alton stop.
The History
The school served children for much of the twentieth century before it was adapted for commercial and residential use. Its modern tenants are not part of a public ghost attraction.

Plan Your Visit
This is an occupied mixed-use property, with residences upstairs. Do not enter residential areas. An Alton ghost-tour operator lists the school as a stop on certain ticketed itineraries, but itinerary access may vary and is not independent permission to enter.
