Former Jacoby Furniture & Funeral Building

The Story
Alton’s former Jacoby furniture store housed a funeral operation, and its basement developed stories of cold spots and sounds from a disconnected intercom.
The Hauntings
The strangest part of the Jacoby account is not a named ghost but a technology that apparently refused to remain silent: paranormal visitors have described hearing sounds from an intercom said to have been disconnected. Others mention cold patches or the sensation of someone nearby in the old basement, which had once been part of the business’s funeral operation. These accounts refer to the historic furniture-and-funeral building, not to every gallery space subsequently run by the Jacoby Arts Center.
The History
The Jacoby family business combined furniture sales with funerary services, including a former basement morgue. The arts center occupied the Broadway building before moving to a new address at 208 State Street.
A sense of place.

Plan Your Visit
The earlier haunted accounts belong to the former Jacoby building at 627 East Broadway. Jacoby Arts Center currently directs visitors to its different State Street premises. No interior paranormal or public visitor access to the former building was established; treat it as an exterior-only historical location.
