Former First Unitarian Church of Alton
Alton, Illinois, United States

The Story
An old Unitarian sanctuary in Alton is associated with the lingering presence of a minister whose death became part of the town’s ghost-tour tradition.
The Hauntings
In 1934 the Rev. Phillip Mercer was found dead inside the church. The former congregation’s own history records his death as a suicide. His story later became an enduring part of Haunted Alton tours, with people saying they felt a presence in the rooms where he worked. Paranormal investigators have also told of apparent voice responses during visits, but the recorded death and later haunting accounts are separate things. The building’s spiritual history stretches far beyond any one unsettling episode.
The History
The congregation dates back to 1836; its Alton church building was dedicated in 1905. The congregation subsequently relocated to Glen Carbon, leaving the old Alton property distinct from its current worship site.
