Spook Hill

Lake Wales, Florida, United States

Road or bridge · local-legend

The Story

Spook Hill’s apparently uphill-rolling cars inspired several ghost explanations. As the National Park Service recounts, one tale credits a buried pirate called Captain Sasparilla with pushing vehicles away; another invokes the spirit of a giant alligator. The NPS also explains the underlying gravity-hill optical illusion: the surrounding landscape makes a downhill slope look uphill. The haunt belongs to the site’s deliberately cultivated mid-century roadside folklore.
