The Story
A fortress above the Old Town, where royal history meets a phantom piper, a headless drummer and a wandering ghost dog.
The Hauntings
Music gives Edinburgh Castle’s ghost lore a distinctive voice. Historic Environment Scotland retells stories of a phantom piper and a headless drummer, joined by the ghost of a wandering dog. These figures belong to the castle’s long tradition of supernatural storytelling, adding another layer to a fortress shaped by royal ceremony, military life and captivity. Look out over the Old Town, and it is easy to understand why this place has gathered so many stories.
The History
Edinburgh Castle rises from Castle Rock, a volcanic outcrop occupied long before the surviving fortress. Across the centuries it has been a royal residence, military stronghold and prison. The 12th-century St Margaret’s Chapel is Edinburgh’s oldest building. Parts of the castle remain in military use, while Historic Environment Scotland welcomes visitors into the rooms, courtyards and history of this enduring city landmark.
