The Story

Rockwood’s Gothic Revival mansion has enough unusual visitor reports that the county itself schedules ghost walks and paranormal programs.

The Hauntings

New Castle County describes reports of activity shared by Rockwood visitors and staff, and its Ghost Walk takes guests to rooms associated with those experiences. Separate paranormal programs invite booked participants to explore parts of the mansion under supervision. Rockwood’s haunting is therefore a living museum tradition with accounts attached to actual rooms, not merely a Halloween stage show. The house also has a long family history involving the Shipley, Bringhurst and Hargraves households.

The History

Built in the nineteenth century, Rockwood is a preserved museum and landscape managed by New Castle County.

Plan Your Visit

Rockwood’s calendar lists scheduled public mansion and ghost programs, but interior galleries have been affected by an accessibility and collections project. Check the latest county calendar for available access before visiting; a park visit is not unescorted mansion access.
