The Story

Built on the grounds of an earlier public hanging, San Diego’s Whaley House is among America’s best-known preserved haunted homes.

The Hauntings

The house’s spectral stories begin before the Whaleys moved in. The site was associated with an execution of a man known as Yankee Jim Robinson, and later visitors came to associate footsteps and apparitions with him. The Whaley family themselves suffered painful losses, and the operator recounts encounters attributed to members of the household. These stories are deeply woven into Old Town’s haunted reputation; the historical execution and the family’s real lives need no embellishment to make the folklore fascinating.

The History

Thomas Whaley began construction in 1856. The preserved house now functions as a museum with a dedicated historical interpretation and ghost-tour program.
