The Story

The most famous lingering guest at the Hotel del Coronado is Kate Morgan, whose 1892 death has given the seaside hotel more than a century of ghost stories.

The Hauntings

Kate arrived at the hotel under another name and was found dead several days later on an exterior stairway. The hotel recounts later sightings of a dark-clad woman along its halls and shore, along with unexplained lights, moved objects, opening doors and voices near her third-floor room. A long-running tradition among staff and guests has kept her memory attached to the original Victorian building. Her identity and death belong to the historical record; identifying a particular apparition as Kate remains the hotel’s paranormal tradition.

The History

The elaborate timber-framed resort opened in 1888 and remains a celebrated Coronado landmark. The coroner concluded that Kate’s 1892 gunshot wound was self-inflicted, though alternative theories circulate in later storytelling.
