The Story
Old Town San Diego’s El Campo Santo holds stories of restless spirits associated with graves disturbed by city streets.
The Hauntings
As San Diego expanded, part of the original burial ground was lost to streets and a railway. The resulting legend says the spirits of those whose resting places were covered over still appear near the old cemetery, occasionally as shadowy figures. Some Old Town ghost tours tell the story within the cemetery itself under special permission. The graveyard is a real and historically significant place; the paranormal story is a later interpretation of its disruption, not a claim that every buried resident was displaced.
The History
California State Parks records 477 burials between 1849 and 1897 and notes that a railway crossed the cemetery in the late nineteenth century.
A sense of place.
