The Story
On the edge of Transylvanian legend, a medieval castle opens a door to Dracula’s world and the older folklore of the strigoi.
The Hauntings
The castle’s official account of Dracula leads beyond the novel into older beliefs around Bran. Local folklore tells of strigoi: people whose spirits were said to leave their sleeping bodies at night and haunt the villagers until the first rooster crowed. These traditions belong to the supernatural landscape of Transylvania. Stoker’s fictional vampire gives many visitors their first way into that world; the region’s own ghost stories offer a path further in.
The History
Bran Castle served as a medieval defensive stronghold and customs post in what is now Romania. In the 20th century it became a royal residence associated with Queen Marie. Its place in modern imagination comes from another story: Bram Stoker’s fictional Count Dracula. Royal history, Gothic literature and regional folklore now meet at the castle, each with its own part to play.
