The Story
The former United Verde Hospital perches above Jerome as a hotel, where an antique elevator and the story of a phantom nurse are part of the lodging experience.
The Hauntings
The hotel’s own historical account recalls paranormal visitors who independently described a displeased head nurse in the former dispensary area. The original desks had been moved into storage; when someone later returned them to the dining space, the story says the nurse stopped expressing her displeasure. Other tales have gathered around the old Otis elevator, particularly an alleged maintenance worker named Claude Harvey. Accounts also speak of corridors echoing with voices, breathing and footsteps recalling the building’s hospital years. The named elevator death belongs to local lore; the account does not establish a documented 1935 incident.
The History
Built as the United Verde Hospital in 1926 and opened for care in early 1927, the building served the mining community until 1950. It reopened as a hotel after restoration in the 1990s.
