Dead Children’s Playground — Maple Hill Park
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Natural landmark · local-legend
The Story
Near Huntsville’s Maple Hill Cemetery, a little playground is associated with moving swings and the laughter of children who cannot be seen.
The Hauntings
The story goes that swings begin to move without anyone on them and that children can sometimes be heard laughing or playing when the grounds are otherwise quiet. Some tellers connect the presence to children lost during the 1918 influenza epidemic. Both the city’s visitors bureau and the University of Southern California’s folklore archive preserve versions of the playground legend. The exact identity of any supposed apparition remains part of the story rather than an established historical claim.
The History
Maple Hill is Huntsville’s old municipal cemetery. The playground sits adjacent to the burial ground and has its own local name within Huntsville’s ghost lore.
A sense of place.
